There are few options for the control of brake noise. However, because the resonant frequencies of the brake components are typically so high (seldom less than 1000-2000 Hz) it is the vehicle suspension that acts as the resonant system in the case of brake moan, creep-groan and judder. Brake squeal noise is radiated by the brake components themselves (the disk, the pads and the caliper assembly) as is clearly seen using laser vibrometry techniques (see Section 5.2). The source for all four classes of brake noise is the pairing of friction surfaces at the pad and rotor disk. īrake judder (occurring at speeds less than walking pace and characterised by frequency components around 10 Hz).īrake creep-groan (occurring at speeds less than walking pace and characterised by frequency components around 100 Hz).īrake moan (occurring at moderate speeds and characterised by frequency components around 100 Hz). ![]() īrake squeal (occurring at higher speeds and having a tonal character with components well above 1000 Hz).There are several distinct categories of brake noise ( Betella et al., 2002): Brake noise has been an issue of concern to vehicle manufacturers for decades.
